One man is dead and another is in critical condition after a vehicle plunged into Lake Ontario early Saturday morning, Toronto paramedics say.
Emergency crews were called to the Toronto shoreline in the area of Cherry and Polson streets at around 3:30 a.m. for report of a vehicle in the water, police say.
In a news release issued Saturday, police said a vehicle with two occupants was heading south on Cherry Street at a high rate of speed.
As the car approached a bridge over Lake Ontario, which was under construction, the driver lost control, leaving the roadway and plunging into the water.
A male passenger was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries. A second man was located and pronounced dead at the scene, paramedics said.
Police say an investigation is ongoing.
Toronto Fire says the vehicle currently remains in the water and is “completely submerged at the bottom of the lake.”
Drivers are advised to use alternate routes as roads are closed in the area.
Anyone who may have video footage of the area or incident is asked to contact investigators.
